Paper Heart

Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera -- The pretend romance between Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera. Although I had to go online to find out that it was just pretend. It was an award winner at last year's Sundance Film Festival. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. (2009-PG-13)

Facing Ali

Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier -- The latest in the tales of Ali's victories (and losses). It goes through each of the fight's that he has had as a professional. Unfortunately, it's old hat. I would give it a 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. (2009-R)

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention: In the 1960s

Frank Zappa, Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner -- Less talking - more music. Interesting, but I would give it a 1 on the music. I would give it a 2 out of 5 stars. (2009-NR)

All About Steve

Sandra Bullock, Thomas Haden Church, Bradley Cooper -- 5 across: Steve's eye color. It is about a cruciverbalist (Sandra Bullock), a person that makes crossword puzzles, who begins to stalk Steve (Bradley Cooper). Only Sandra Bullock could make this work. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. (2009-PG-13)

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell

Matt Czuchry, Jesse Bradford, Geoff Stults, Traci Lords -- Now here's a stretch. Three friends go to a strip club because one of them is getting married. Actually, better than "The Hangover". I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars. (2009-UR)

Surrogates

Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, James Cromwell -- I saw it in the theater four months ago. An excellent movie! It has to do with people living vicariously through their robot "surrogates". I would rate it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. (2009-PG-13)

Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins' Ball

Tom Berenger, Ernie Hudson, Vinnie Jones, Michael Parks -- Second worst movie I have seen in a long time! Two stinkers in a week. I saw the coming attractions for this movie. Unfortunately, they were the best 15 seconds in the entire film. I would rate it 1 3/4 out of 5 stars. (2010-NR)

The Invention of Lying

Ricky Gervias, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe -- A land where people can't lie, but a man learns to prevaricate. Kind of like "Liar, Liar", only the opposite. I love the Ricky Gervias. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. (2009-PG-13)

Gamer

Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall, Kyra Sedgwick, Alison Lohman, Ludacris, John Leguizamo -- Every fifteen year old boy's fantasy. It's about a guy playing "Call of Duty" in real life. Again, MTV-Frame. I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars. (2009-R)

Pandorum

Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Antje Traue -- About a ship traveling to a distant galaxy. Along the way, Payton (Dennis Quaid) and Bower (Ben Foster) have to re-boot the hyperdrive. Both of them are worried about Pandorum -- which is a disease that takes over the mind. At least half of it is in MTV-Frame, which is where the camera is shot from many different angles all lasting about a second. I am glad that I waited for it to come out on DVD. I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars. (2009-R)

Homicide

Joe Mantegna, William H. Macy, Rebecca Pidgeon, Ving Rhames -- The worst piece of trash I have seen in a long time! It is about a homicide detective. I would rate it 1 1/2 out of 5 stars. (1991-R)

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Paranormal Activity

Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs -- I waited for a hour and twenty-three minutes for something good to happen. It never did. I heard that it cost $100,000 to produce. $90,000 too much. I would rate it 2 out of 5 stars. (2007-R)

Friday, January 15, 2010

The Hurt Locker

Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse -- Absolutely awesome! About the U.S. Army's EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) operating out of Iraq. I saw it in the theater, and when it came out on video, I had to see it again. From beginning to end -- awesomeness! I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars. (2008-R)

The Burning Plain

Charlize Theron, Kim Basinger, John Corbin, Robin Tunney -- Excellent direction. I guess I wanted to see what happened next. I won't tell you how it ends, but eventually it all makes sense. I would rate it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. (2008-R)

Monday, January 11, 2010

50 Dead Men Walking

Ben Kingsely, Jim Sturgess, Rose McGowan -- The true story of an IRA (Irish Republic Army) commander. I remember the IRA during the 70s and 80s. It's a really good story. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. (2008-R)

Sunday, January 10, 2010

36 Hours

James Garner, Rod Taylor, John Banner -- A World War II major is convinced he has amnesia in order to reveal his plans about D-Day. I got the part with the paper cut immediately. I would rate it 2 out of 5 stars. (1965-NR)

Friday, January 8, 2010

The Long Gray Line

Tyrone Power, Maureen O'Hara, Peter Graves -- About Martin Maher and the United States Military Academy. I would give it 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. (1955-NR)

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

The Big Kahuna

Kevin Spacey, Danny DiVito, Peter Facinelli -- Three guys talk about industrial lubricants. I think there was some kind of morality play involved. I would rate it 2 out of 5 stars. (1999-R)

Adam

Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher, Amy Irving -- The main character has Asperger's syndrome. His love interest does not. Interesting story. Reminds me of "Mozart and the Whale". I would give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. (2009-PG-13)

Sunday, January 3, 2010

Shorts

Jon Cryer, James Spader, William H. Macy -- Pretty sophomoric tale of a wishing-rock and all the trouble it leads to. However, the stare-down contest was cool. I would rate it as 2 out of 5 stars. (2009-PG)

Friday, January 1, 2010

The Proposal

Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds -- Absolutely awful! I guess Sandra Bullock makes two kinds of movies. Either she is great in them ("A Time to Kill", "Miss Congeniality", "Crash" and "The Blind Side"), or they are abysmally appalling ("Gun Shy", "Miss Congeniality 2", "Love Potion #9", and now "The Proposal"). I would rate it 1 out of 5 stars. (2009-PG-13)

How to Be a Serial Killer

Dameon Clarke, Matthew Gray Gubler -- A black comedy. A man takes on a protégé to help him with his nefarious deeds. I would rate it as 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. (2008-R)

A Perfect Getaway

Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant, Kiele Sanchez -- For the first hour, I couldn't wait for it to end. All of the sudden it got really interesting. I mean really, really interesting. I am not going to give any of the plot away. You have to see it for yourself. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. (2009-UR)
